Laser hair removal is just one of many laser skin services available at the Laser Center of Orlando. Its many benefits make it a popular option, especially for clients who are tired of waxing, shaving, tweezing, and ingrown and unwanted hair. But what can I expect after the treatment, and what should I avoid? Our team will discuss aftercare instructions to ensure the best possible results.
Ten things not to do after laser hair removal
- Touching the treated area. After laser hair removal, we encourage clients to avoid touching the treated area as much as possible. The skin may be sensitive, so keep your hands away from the area.
- Exposing the skin to sunlight. UV rays damage the natural skin and can cause hyperpigmentation before and after laser hair removal. It is best to avoid any direct sun exposure on treatment sites for at least six weeks before and after treatment. Also, always wear sunscreen and a brimmed hat after treatment when outside.
- Using hot water on the skin. Hot water can irritate the skin and increase redness and/or swelling after treatment. Stick to lukewarm or cooler water when showering or washing the treated area.
- Picking or scratching at the skin. It may be tempting to pick or scratch at any little surface hair remnants that eject after a laser hair removal treatment, but this can cause unnecessary skin irritation. Let the skin recover naturally.
- Applying harsh products. After treatment, it is best to avoid using harsh skincare products such as exfoliants or peels on the treated area for at least a week. These can irritate the sensitive skin and slow down the healing process.
- Waxing or plucking hairs in between treatments. Laser hair removal works by actually targeting the hair follicles, so it is important not to disrupt them in between treatments by waxing or plucking hairs. Shaving and exfoliating are still okay.
- Skipping follow-up appointments. It is vital that you attend all of your scheduled follow-up appointments for laser hair removal at six-week intervals. This timeline keeps the hairs attached to the blood supply, which is critical for best results. Also, this allows the technician to assess your progress and make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan.
- Ignoring post-treatment instructions. Your technician provides you with specific instructions for caring for your skin after your laser hair removal treatments. It is crucial to follow these instructions carefully to ensure optimal results and minimize potential side effects.
- Using tanning beds or self-tanners. Similar to sun exposure, using tanning beds or self-tanners can cause hyperpigmentation and interfere with the effectiveness of laser hair removal treatments.
- Expecting immediate results. Laser hair removal is a process that takes multiple sessions to achieve desired results. Although you will be impressed with your first treatment, it is important to have realistic expectations and understand that it may take several treatments for the final laser hair removal results. Patience and consistency are key for successful laser hair removal.
